Ok, after a whole 2 days of googling this problem, I cant seem to find a solution...
Vista cant seem to find my sound card. Simple, you'd think? Not really. I am running a laptop, so physically removing/reinstalling the card wouldnt work in this case.
I have both a vista beta driver and the xp drivers installed for my sound card.
I just cant seem to find the device at all in my list, and every other device has been located and accounted for.
What can I do??

Vista not finding any sound card...
What sound card?

Its a realtek, I think its an on board one. I cant give you the model, since I dont want to open my laptop.
It will be on the manufacturer's website.

It's not your fault but you are duplicate posting because there is a bug in the html Communities web site and MSFT Communities personnel haven't lifted a finger to fix it in a week or two. I recommend you use the NNTP newsreader that you have with a click in Vista Win Mail by opening Win Mail and on the left pain click Microsoft Help Groups on the left or words close and that will download the newsgroups for you. You'll have a lot more features, be able to chose downloading new groups , or all the groups ect. This is much faster for viewing and using these groups than the Communities web site which has never gotten less clunky despite the fact that all the IE teams work at Redmond MSFT, as does Dean Hachamovitch Internet Explorer Chief, and the people paid to maintain the Communities sites for MSFT. Why the technology of IE at Redmond has never been applied for years and years to make the Communities sites less like a legless snail would be a decent question but MSFT is challenged often when it comes to communicating among teams who obviously should communicate with each other despite the fact they have all the cute little Windows mobiles, latest cell technology and are pioneering some of the cell/web technology and all the cute little Origamis as the first on their blocks to get them.
As to the sound card question, we could help you and you could help yourself by googling the name of the manufacture of the card with the word Vista.
You need not open the box. You can:
1) Go to Control Panel>Audio Devices and Sound Themes and the first entry should ID your card--at least I'm sure it will for stand alone sound cards. 2) You can type dxdiag in the run box (windows key +r brings it up>and click the sound tab on dxdiag. 3) You can go to www.belarc.com and click downloads and that convenient free tiny app will print out your software, hardware, and product keys and once done I'd web base email it to yourself (Yahoo, Hotmail, whatever)so that you have that information available in a web based email and always available to you even if that laptop crashes and won't boot for a time.
If you can tell us the onboard sound card, one of us can probably locate a driver and help you install in Vista. No one at this point could guarantee that, but we would try. Some older sound drivers like Santa Cruz Turtle Beach (that was made about the Time the dreadful ME was hatched on the world when MSFT had a particularly Machiavelian streak and wanted to keep themselves and OEM partners in mo' money) require workarounds to get in, but odds are we can get a driver in for your onboard.
Good luck,
CH

You have not explained what happened when I offered you several other alternatives. I remember something about leading horses to water but not being able to make them drink. I also offered you: (besides introducing you to using the Win Mail NNTP setup so you would have beeter newsgroup use)--and there is absolutely plenty listed using these other methods and I did help *you* there so what in the world happened when you used them???

In the context of people using IE as a tool to access this newsgroup, with the posting errors, Mr. Harris, the error seems to be with the browser.

RealTek something...cant remember the model number. But the driver I have been using on XP is on this page that also lists the Vista driver that I have both installed right now. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True

What can I do??
Is ANYTHING listed in your device manager under teh headings 'Sound Video, and Game Controllers'?
The reason I ask is because on my Dell Dimension E510 with integrated sound (Sigmatel) and Vista 32, I have a 'High Definition Audio' controller listed as working and I know that it's referring to my integrated audio,
BUT
On my desktop in the lower right corner, the speaker icon has an X next to it, and when you click on the volume icon it says 'No audio device installed' and I get no sound.
So somehow, device manager knows that the drivers for the integrated audio are installed, but the 'Audio' icon in control panel says there is nothing installed.

Nothing listed under the device manager. I've tried having it search multiple times.
I take that back, there is a 'High Definition Audio Controller' listed under 'System Devices'. And the driver for it is up to date.
I removed it, and then '?'s for my card did start showing up...like 10x
Then bluescreened.
I am having the same problem.. Device Mgr is showing all is well, but the icon is showing no Audio Output Device Installed.
Any one figure it out yet? Sure would be great to hear things again :-)

I've been trying Vista on my Dell Dimension E510. 3.0Ghz 630 cpu 1gig ram Intergrated video (Intel 945G express) Integrated audio (sigmatel) Happauge MCE 150 tuner.
Previous to Vista it was running just fine on Xp MCE 2005
I have several HD's for expirmenting with....
80gig original HD with XP MCE 2005
100gig to play with Vista 32 160gig to play with Vista 64.
Originally I installed Vista 64 on the 160gig, and everything appeared to be fine sound woked, MCE worked, etc.. The only thing that did not work was an added network card (it has 10/100 built in)
Put in the 100gig and installed Vista 32. (not all installs are clean installs) after removing the tuner and the NIC. Everything installed just fine. Sound worked fine. Installed the TV tuner, no problem. Windows Update found drivers for the tuner. Install a Dlink 1gig network card. On boot-up, the volume icon had the red x and no sound. I had not installed any drivers yet for the Dlink. Device manager showed everthing (except the Dlink) fine. Volume icon says no audio device installed. Remove Dlink card. No change. No sound, volume still has the red X. Do a system restore back to the oldest restore point long before I installed the Dlink card and back when the sound worked. No change , still no sound, red X still showing.
Do a clean install of Vista 32 again, with both the tuner and the NIC removed. No change. Still no sound, red X still showing. ?????
OK, remove that HD and install the 160gig Vista 64 drive in. No sound. Red X is showing. WTF????
This morning I reinstall the 100gig drive and do a clean Install of Vista 64. Sound now works again, no Red X.
go figure.

Unknown. After all I removed all teh cards from the system that had been added and tried another clean install with no luck last night.
On top of all that, today I decided to completely reinstall Vista yet again, this time in a Vista-32/Vista-64 dual boot mode,
I left the tuner and the Dlink card in, and proceded to do a clean install of Vista-32 on the first half of the 100gig drive (Vista-64 will get installed on the other half ).
Lo and behold, I'm back to having the sound work just fine in Vista-32. ???
WTF
I'm in the process right now of installing Vista-64.
IRQ conflicts? I suppose it's possible if the MB is re-arranging interrupts as cards get added and removed, but keep in mind that in every case, the properties for the integrated sound card (Sigmatel) have show the device to be fine with no conflicts.
The adventures of Vista continue.....

I just got an E510 and I installed vista beta 2 32 edition. Got same X icon at the bottom right but decided to try the sound with my headphones( i have not installed my speakers yet ). Worked fine no problems at all and the X icon went away. I beleive the sound drivers for the integrated chip are natives for vista and the X is just a system error. I am not sure if things worked because I intalled windows media player 11 or because I plugged my headphone on the computer but on of the two made the X go away.

There is no such thing as a "stupid question" There are only stupid people. You are the poster boy of stupid.

Well it's clear u have no idea what your talking about...this is what Beta testing is all about..just because u have no clue what to do, don't take it out on everyone else. So tell u what after We real beta testers find the answer to this problem then u can come back here and learn something. So go back to playing with your G.I. joe's and stop trying to act like an adult.

Stupid for what ?
This is a general discussion group about windows vista, my post was not a question but a solution to a problem that occurred after installing Vista. Do you think that it is normal to have in the device manager a sound device showing as working normally and having at the bottom right a red cross showing that no audio device was found ? That's what happened to me and hundreds of other people and if I post a message saying that My problem was solved by doing certain things, that's being helpful. What's stupid is to spend your time on the forum, criticizing others instead of posting constructive messages.
